Who would win(F1 vs CART...)?
So its difficult to get a good idea about how fast certain cars lap the track.. So, negating drivers, based on stats and car capabilites only, which car would stand the best chance of winning a race (no pitstops). Lets say Le Mans since its got plenty of high speed and some twisties:
an F1 car
a CART car
an Indy car
a Winston Cup car
an LMP Prototype (Audi R8).
I'd think F1 since its where all the drivers aspire to reach, but would the F1 car win?

I would definately think that it is between the F1 and CART cars due to the amount of downforce. Between those two it's a pretty hard call. It's always hard to get good performance numbers on the engines, but they are close. As far as handling F1 cars now have to run on grooved tires which is a pretty big disadvantage. I'm not sure how they compare when it comes to rules for aerodynamic aids. So I'm just gonna go with F1 because of the drivers
On a random but sort of related note, I've wondered before how a top fuel dragster would do on a street course if it managed to make it around without blowing up an engine, of course . Obviously, they aren't going to do hot around a corner, but I'm sure with some *very* careful throttle control you could get it around and they can make up tons of time an a starightaway even if you go easy on the throttle. The brakes are OK considering most of the traction is in the rear. Anyway, I've heard of stranger things being raced, so if anyone has ever heard of someone trying something like that it would be pretty funny to hear about.

F1...by a lot. Anywhere from 5 to 10 seconds a lap over the next closest competitor (probably the Champ car). The LMP would probably finish third with the NASCAR fourth. And the Indy car would finish fifth because it's left-turn only.

I was gonna do a bunch of work and compare the specs, but I can't find the CART ones easily enough. So I'll just say F1 on a tight course, and CART on a higher speed course. Why? Despite my lack of specs, I know that CART cars are rumored to make 900 - 950 hp, and F1 is rumored to make 850 or so, which gives the high-speed edge to CART. I also know that Mc Laren and Ferrari are rumored to spend as much as $250 million on their programs per year. I've never heard a huge figure like that on CART, so I'm going to say in everything but HP, F1 has the advatage, hence the twisty win for F1.
I do know that the track record at Willow Springs is held by Michael Andretti in a CART at 01:06.050, and second is held by Nigel Mansell in an F1 at 01:06.300. The problem is that Mansell's time was set in 1982, Andretti's in 1987, and the specs and tire tech, etc changed during those 5 years....
Edit - and if your race was for a long duration, like over 8 hours, the LMP would win, cause the CART and the F1 would blow up.

I would have to say F1. I don't remember the exact figures...but if memory serves me, a CART or Indy car tops out at around 220mph on an oval. The last F1 race I watched (grand prix of france) I think I remember the AVERAGE speed to be over 200mph. Can someone confirm that?

I can confirm that unless the last race you saw was in a straight line, the average speed was definitely not 200mph. And CARTS can hit 230+...
ok, I looked it up. The top speed hit at Magny-Cours (French GP) is about 190mph. The average speed is a little over 120 mph. (Shuey pp lap at 1:12.989 for a 2.641 mile course.
