People drink for the psychoactive effect. It disinhibits you. You are more relaxed. It is a social lubricant. Some people are more reserved, so when they drink they are more talkative and make more friends at parties--everyone has a better time.
Drinking on dates makes flirting easier. Actually, it just makes dating easier in general. It takes away the jitters and makes everything smoother.
Some people drink to relax, some drink to have a good time. It can make you problems go away while you are drunk or it may make them worse depending on the situation.
Some people are alcoholics and are physically dependent on alcohol.
In short, too many reasons to list. Alcohol will never go away. It is part of the fabric of mankind.
