Dunno where you guys live, but here, $60k a year, or a $100k a year household income allows an average lifestyle, it's nowhere near being wealthy.
Typical house - $150k
Property taxes on that house - $2000
Just a fairly cheap area... if you don't go out to eat other than to "the clubs" (American legion, etc..) and don't take vacations and don't buy new cars or clothes a fair amount of that $60-$100k goes into savings.....
I live in Southwestern Michigan, and around here you can live fairly comfortably on $30k per year. Rent on a decent 3 bedroom house with garage is $600-700/moth. I have no idea how much property taxes are.
Yay for Harrisburg!!
Hello from Sh!tsburgh
PA is cheap as hell to live in. PA is cheap as hell period. Theres nothing here in PA.
Just broken dreams. And Bam Margera. All of PA is either Amish idiots or towns that were thriving 60 years ago. Thats it.
I want to move to NC to get a nice balance away from the winters of PA and the hurricanes of FL.
Oh ya.. My grandfather acts like he doesnt have two pennies to rub together. Hes a millionaire!
Alot of times hell take me and my girlfriend out to eat. We might spend $100. He'll pay the bill no problem and then lay a $5 on the table and later on talk about how he tips well.. HAHA. Little does he know half the time I lay a $20 on top of that $5 cause I feel so bad.

I've noticed this aswell...
my conclusion....
people that have money don't like to reveal they have it cause they don't want the leaches/thiefs coming out of the woodworks.
my simple answer to your simple question..

Ever seen how much it costs to buy a condo or townhouse in one of Philadelphia's so-called "up and coming" neighborhoods? Then again Philly is like it's own separate entity that's very unsimilar to the rest of the state.
I'm more concerned with those that don't have money yet act like they do, primarily because I believe there are many more of them. I feel as though they are too wrapped up and what other people think of them and judging others based on their possessions.
I have next-door neighbors like that. I can tell by their spending habits that they are wrapped up in debt. It's almost amusing to watch them comparing themselves to and competing with the neighbors. It's amazing to me how they try to associate only with people that at least appear to have money. It's hilarious to me whenever I have a friend or colleague stop by the house that happens to have a nice car and I get a call from my neighbor the next day asking me who it was.
I guess it all fascinates me because I don't understand the constant need to impress other people. I chose the things I have based on my own needs, interests, and current financial situation rather than what others will think of me. But hey, that's just me.

On the other hand, I too wonder why some people with money tend to hoard it. But I can understand that it offers some a sense of security which they may value more than the things on which the money could be spent.
I certainly agree that you can't take it with you so you might as well enjoy [some of] it. But I think those that suggest to live for today (nobody in this thread so far) are a bit extreme as I believe it's smart to plan for tomorrow.
