Default Why is Gas so Expensive in Europe?

Okay title says it all, and if you dont know its WAY more than gas in the U.S. I ask this only because the future of gas is obviously higher price (they might drop next week, but its just putting off the inevitable).

So I ask that question, and for an answer to my curiosity...

let me try to explain ninethreeeleven...for example here in my country that is portugal we have so high price because our governors remember to give free hand to the fuel companies...so instead of having lower prices we have higher than before and we have to deal with that...and everyday that pass the price come up more and more...
I really dont know when it will stop...for a liter of gasoline we pay near 1.20 Euro = 1.44288 US Dollar im not sure but is something like that..and if it isnt it will be in a week or so...

taxes.

"Taxes, including federal and local, account for about 31 percent of the total price of gas in the United States. Federal excise taxes are 18.4 cents per gallon, and state excise taxes average 19.96 cents per gallon. There may also be some additional state sales taxes, as well as local and city taxes. In Europe, gas prices are far higher than in America because taxes on gas are much higher. For example, a gallon of gas in England cost $4.71 in September 2000, with $3.40 going to taxes."

He's right. The amount of taxes on fuel in the UK is outrageous ..... the government know that people have no choice but to buy it, so they raise billions of $ every year from fuel taxes. In the UK people are referring to taxes like these as "stealth taxes" since the government keeps saying that they are not increasing income tax, but are raising more and more money every year through such indirect taxes

TAXES. TAXES. TAXES. TAXES. TAXES. TAXES. TAXES.

Gas prices are about $7.50-$8.00 a gallon right now.
OF which, 74% is tax.

that on top of the yearly car tax you pay of $330.00....

oh...and all that on top of the 17.5% sales tax you paid when you bought your S2000....

oh...and did i mention that the UK has some of the highest new car vehicle prices in the world???

S2000s are near $50k

and if we are talking about taxation....how about the TV license scam...you can own a tv and vcr in the UK....but it is illegal to watch it unless you buy a license....and no i dont mean subscribe to satellite or cable...i mean buuy a TV license....$200.00 a year!

and people still wonder why I left!!!!

Sorry , you are correct .... I've noticed that the part of the road near my parents house 15 yards past the spot where the speed limit goes from 70mph to 30mph is a serious accident black spot ..... well it has been ever since they put a speed camera there and every brakes really heavily as soon as they spot it
