Default Windows XP Home and Photoshop/Illustrator

I have err... a friend with Windows XP Home on a laptop, with Photoshop 6 and Illustrator 9 with the latest updates to Windows and the Adobe products. Photoshop and Illustrator keep crashing every so often when you're working for a while (and of course don't have the time to save), then all of a sudden the screen goes black and the computer reboots.

Has anyone had success with XP Home and Photoshop and Illustrator installed?

I'm running xp prof on a laptop and desktop both with photoshop 6. Neither have ever crashed while using photoshop.

I am fresh out of ideas however, and I'm not sure why it could be crashing. I would probably blame it on compaq.. I have never had good luck with those computers.

Running XP home since October on a generic, and my wife is running XP home on an HP.

I've never had a crash for any reason. I think my wife crashed hers a couple of times.

rstark - but the swap disk setup for photoshop, how much do you have setup?
edit - preferences. this might have something to do with it. otherwise, I would go to www.atitech.com and see if there are updated drivers, or rather "reference drivers" for that particular video chip (its not a chipset - just a chip).

Does the sucker bluescreen? There will generally be a .DLL file listed as a culprit. What is it?

Also, if you use BlackIce Defender, remove it from your system completely. Version 2.9(x) causes bluescreens.

yea, you should also start with MSCONFIG to t-shoot the issue. (start - run - msconfig - disable startup items as a first step)
