Default working in other countries... (other than the US)

has anyone done that? and i'm not talking about canada

now that i'm unemployed and with Tim coming up fast on the learning curve with the company's ops, maybe i'll be able to drop everything and go work somewhere out in the world with my wife. asia, europe, middle east, etc.

if anyone's worked outside of the north american hemisphere, can you share your experiences? positive and negative info welcomed.

Germany for thee years and London for 6 months. Best things I've ever done. If you have the ability, I highly recommend it. When else are you going to do it. I think it's the best thing I ever did. I had no concept of how Americans were viewed until I lived there.

Not for a continued period of time, but I do travel to Europe fairly often. If you can find a US company that will send you to Europe for a year or two, that'd be great. I was offered this deal:

A raise to go over there
1-2 years
since I am working over seas, I don't have ot pay income tax in the US
Company to pay for income tax in The Netherlands
Company pay for ALL housing
Company pay for car
Company pay for car tax and insurance
Company pay for all gas
company pay for meals when travelling in Europe.

Nice deal eh?

Ok so what about Canada? hmmmm. You can convert your US money to canadian, and live very very high on the hog. Drive me to work everyday, and pick me up of course. See you wouldn't even need a job!

To be honest, I personally would pick australia or new zealand to work.

I guess that's a loaded question, and very open to generalizations. Perhaps I should have worded my comment differently... I had no idea how set in my ways I was until I saw other cultures. I do however, think I personally saw plenty of Americans that were quite egotisitcal and "Ameri-centric" as in "the world revolves around the U.S.". Now before everyone opens up the can-o-whoop-ass on me, I don't think that every American is that way. Heck, it might even bother me more than most Europeans to see Americans show up somewhere and act like they own the place. Hmmm, I'm ranting now.

Back to the positive stuff.... I can sum it up this way.... It's a life-long experience. You only get one life, might as well go out and do the things you always wanted to do. Just living in Germany afforded me the opportunity to visit places like France, The Netherlands, Belgium, Italy, the UK, Ireland, Luxembourg.
