This happened in Mississippi, a guy driving to work and hears a pop, the
car stalls - he opens the hood and finds this

Had an old '69 Plymouth once. Started it up in the morning and heard a loud "thud". Saw a cat take off from under the car shaking it's head.

The car immediately stalled and would not restart.

The cat was sleeping on the engine, when the engine started, the cat took off hitting one of the belts, knocking it completely off the engine. Cat was unharmed.

Looks like the "serpentine belt" met it's match with the real serpent. Yes the car would stall without the belt, if you notice it's not there.
