Get a copy of the Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) manual, 1987 edition (http://bookstore.gpo.gov/ ), and look up the industry you're interested in. Once you get the SIC code, do a search in the Edgar database at http://www.sec.gov/edgar/searchedgar/compa...panysearch.html to find public companies that have entered that SIC in their SEC filings. I think EDGAR still runs on SIC codes, not the updated NAICS codes. Anyway, both code lists are available free on government websites, if you don't want to buy the book.
There are probably easier ways to do it if you have for-pay services like Bloomberg or OneSource or a bunch of others.
