what matters is what you and your partner care about.
if its social acceptance in a culture that places a high value on gigantic diamonds, then you'll end up wasting a ton of money on a rock.
if its not, ... you're lucky

If you go real, look for something non-retail. There's a guy over on the 6speed forums who does amazing work for a lot less than what you'd pay at Blue Nile. I forget his screen name offhand, but if you're interested I'll look him up.
