If you were declared by medical and legal professionals to be in a vegetative state or if you were terminally ill, would you want to be kept alive by artificial means? How would you choose to end this chapter of your life?

If you want to die naturally or unplugged better wait till the Bushes are out of office. Once again the moral right decides what you should do. Don't see them volunteering to take care of the institutionalized people or medical bills. Great quality of life living as a breathing vegetable, just ask Jeb. Abortions will be illegal next, and once again the righteous right will be happy to let these people cope with their problems when the unwanted or medically handicapped are born. Goes hand in hand with the reduction in budget benefits to the poor and handicapped while the military budget takes us to previously unknown deficeit stratopheres. Guess I am just morally inept to think people can and should be able to think for themselves and have their own moral values. This is the same administration that doesn't want additional government involvement in our lives. Rant over and I am sure my views will not change the opinions of far right. Only difference is that I concede their right to their views.

Please don't hijack this thread with your political opinions. I'm not gonna lock the thread b/c I think this is a worthy topic of discussion, but let's keep it focused.

That said, I'd have to go with an emphatic "NO" on the stated question, though whether I'm a vegetable or terminally ill would certainly affect how I wanted to go out.

So maybe we need 2 polls, one for vegetable and one for terminally ill. because as it is now your answer could not be given correctly.

Feel free to delete my post. The poll/question is based on a political decision or there would be no question. Sorry to offend.

I'm of similar mind with the Dawg. Unplug my ass. I have told my wife about the many reasons I'd want me dead and I told her if she doesn't have the strength to do it I'll appoint someone who does. Since I work in the hospital/ICU I am privy to alot of these things. I agree with dawg, maybe I don't value life enough, maybe I'll change my mind when we have children.

One thing though. Put it in notarized handwriting exactly what you'd want done. If you know a physician discuss every facet of things. There is a broad spectrum of things you can say yes and no to from oxygen to full chemical life support. If you say yes to something like a breathing tube, you should stipulate a time length and under what conditions to remove it.

Figure out to yourself what you believe life and living is and then let your loved ones know specifically. This will keep other people who think they know what's best for you from taking over.

Medical futility and overuse of recourses is a huge thing. It's IMO kind of greedy to overuse the system on a hopeless case and funnel funds that could save many more people.
