Sounds close to CA's VLF taxes. No sympathy here.

big deal. If you own a car in Chicago, you have to buy a permit just to park on the street. Look elsewhere for sympathy.

I sell auto parts. When people ask me if I know anything about cars, I say "Yes. They're expensive and they're a pain in the ass." If you can't deal with those two altruisms, buy a bike.

Still makes no sense to apply the tax on the value of the vehicle. Should be based on something like vehicle weight as I said before. In fact, Michigan does exactly that for vehicles older than 1985 (why? Probably because that '85 taurus won't worth a chit by now but still weighs quite a bit hahaha). Anyways, it's not only people like myself that think this is not fair. Quite a few politicians believe this is a bs as well and have attempted to get rid of it. I know for sure there has been some attempts to get rid of it in CA via 5-year "phase-out" plan.

In NC, you pay a 3% highway use tax instead of paying the 7% sales tax. Depending on which county/city you live, you also pay a yearly property tax on the car. It's a lot less than AZ and CA though.

[QUOTE=Gymkata,Nov 2 2006, 07:52 AM] I would think if the maintenence of the roads and such were the intent, it really should be levied on the vehicle weight for instance...not the base msrp of the car.
