Default Wow, just got my AZ DL and I'm in shock!

It looks like it will cost an arm and a leg to keep a decent car in your garage. Who's smart idea was this and has there been (or is there) an effort to abolish this :cough: BS :cough: tax? Sorry, just had to rant a bit .

B. What exactly is the nature of this tax? Is it attached to the car, to the license? Is it a one time "tax," a one time "administrative fee," or an ongoing tax for possessing your DL? Basically, what's shakin' with the specifics here?

nothing wrong with car/liscense related taxes. road repair/maintenance/projects require funds and what better way to generate funds than through people who are the primary users of those roads.

Do we have any Singapore owners here? Ask them about tax. An S2000 costs over $140K to buy and $500 a month to register!!!

Then again every road is a super highway without a bump to be seen.

The Nature? -- Basically the state has found a way to make up for its inefficiency by applying tax on the residents automobile. This practice is a "leftover" from the '30...a tax offcer would visit your house and would find your TV and freezer, but for some reason, the car is nowhere to be found. Hense, the birth of "car tax."

I don't know if attached to the car itself or the license, all I know is that you need to pay this in order to register your car and AZ DL. And No, it's NOT a one-time only "ad" fee. You have to pay this EVERY year, when you need to get those stickers to put on your tag (16.25%/year depresiation accounted for).

Exactly how much did it cost? Maybe we should compare AZ fees to other states.

The year you buy your car, assuming brand new, the tax is 3% of the 60% of the BASE MSRP. For subsequent years, you multiply $2.89 times the $LEVY/$100, where $LEVY is 16.25% less than the previous year.

So for a new car with base msrp of $25000, the 1st year levy is $15000, and you pay $420. The next year $363.06 etc.

Is this instead of sales tax, or do you pay that too?
