I know s2ki.com has a lot of engineers. At 17500$ it's too much for an average person, but a kinko's could do let you use it for 100 bucks a pop?

Rapid Prototyping Machines have been in use for several years. I've enjoyed using them and they're great for hands on and test fitting new products.

It's been my personal goal now to get my company one of these machines. We just never use plastic, and don't really need to prototype very often.

The cost of materials to print is still pretty high. Coolest will be when you can design yourself things like a snorkel, new interior components, etc etc and install them in your car.

Design new dorknobs and electrical fixtures, art and display pieces for your house, etc.

Will be cool!!

they're pretty cool. some of them can use multiple materials, so you can make a flexible hinge on a somewhat rigid part. i just was on the phone with a company that makes them this morning actually.

it's pretty cool to make a computer model of a part and then print the real thing, especially when it has more than just the form of the final design.

Wow. I work in the printer business. Wonder how long until one of these comes through the doors. I'm kind of pumped.
