WRX in new Motortrend
It says in the new issue that 0-60 and 1/4 mile times are 5.6 and 14.2 respectively. Is this for real? Out of 227 hp with over 3000 lbs of weight? Or do they use a similar launch technique to us (7k clutch drop). Still, it seems like a pretty good value if true.
This debate will probably rage forever, but here's my 2c. I own both an S2K and a WRX.
My WRX is the last model which is slightly less powerful but lighter than the new one. It is faster in a straight line but the new one has more outright grip on the 17 inch wheels. They're basically comparable.
Here it comes: The WRX is faster than the S2K in everything except outright top speed and mid corner speed (at the apex). It will eat an S2K in real world acceleration, turning in under brakes and rocketing out of corners. Wet the road and there's no contest. I drive both these cars on a daily basis and I know what I'm talking about. If you modify both cars with the same amount spent the difference just gets bigger. You can get 350HP out of a WRX with ease. The incredible midrange urge and AWD grip will just have a WRX romping away from the S2K on almost any road, with almost any driver. In professional GTP racing here in Oz the WRXs are clearly faster than the S2Ks, and that's on a circuit, the natural home of the S2K. What would happen on an imperfect surface?
Now, which car do you think I would choose to drive on a twisty road every time? The S2K of course. This car is about rewarding and fun driving. The WRX might be capable, but a trained monkey could drive it fast. The power's all in the midrange, and the chassis does all the work for you. The engine doesn't scream to the redline like an S2K (at least not in standard trim). It's a mighty impressive car, but I don't love it like I do my Honda.
