WRX Tested in Auto World......5.4 to Sixty, 14.2

No ringer here. Its amazing what a good AWD launch will do to a 1/4 mile time. I used to own a stock DSM (1993 eagle talon TSI AWD) It had 195 HP and weighed about the same. My best run was a 14.44.
With about 30 HP more even 14.0-14.1s are a possibility in the right hands and under the right conditions.
At the 1/4 mile point though with a car like the s2k you would be pretty much blowing past it.

i guess it is possible with a "broken in" wrx it may run a decent bit better.

Good on you Scot - glad to see you're beginning to see the light.
For those of you in the Northern parts of the 'states I don't think you can go past the Rex (as we Ozzies call the WRX) as a value for money all rounder.

WRX is not as fast as the numbers indicate. It 'can' do those times but it does 80% of the work with the launch. WRX is an awesome launcher .... though to launch it 'fast' you need to drop the clutch from 6k+ revs and spin all 4 wheels. I don't need to tell you what the clutch looks/smells like when you do that. Here they very often 'break' the clutch in WRX while trying to extract the best 0-100km/h time. It is not doable/feasable to get those kind of numbers on a road without needing a new clutch every week.
Also, even with this 'super lauch', the WRX will tail the S2000 by good 10 - 20km/h (about 10mph) when crossing the 400m mark ... with a 'super' launch it can get to the 400m mark before S2000, but at all times it will be travelling slower. WRX covers ground real well.
Last of all, I have a friend with a maildly modded WRX (the previous lighter, hence faster version). He can't get his in faster for 0-100km/h sprint than 6.6secs (that's 6.2secs for 0-60mph) .. .and he's on his 3rn clutch (the last 2 were 3rd party heavier/tougher cluthes). If everything goes well, I'll meet up with him tonight and I'll post some 'real world' findings.
ps. Even after all that, WRX is the performance bargain here 'down under' ... the WRX costs here less than 60% of S2000. Untill recently there was nothing that could touch it for 'performance' for that price. Now we have the new 200SX (Silvia) here and that seems to be taking the current 'bargain performance bargain crown' around here.
pps. Another friend with a WRX STI tells me that he can't spin the wheels on the car either without wrecking the clutch (lots of smore and smell) ... that is at least not in the dry.

I just drove a WRX today. Didn't get to do any hard launches (the salesman rode along), but acceleration wise, on the roll, its nothing to write home about in stock form. I drove my S2K to the dealer and getting back in for the ride home the S2K felt quicker just about everywhere. The throttle response on the WRX is also really slow until you get it up in the 3500-4000 rpm range. Car had 80 miles on it, so I'm sure it will get quicker with breakin, but the 93-95 mph trap speeds are representative of how it accelerates in gear. Great pull between 3000-6000 rpm so that's where you should drive it.
A pretty decent car for a fun daily driver with a trunk, 4-drs, etc. Great all weather car as well. The back seat is useless for all but taking friends to lunch or hauling kids though. Lots of mod potential too what with the turbo and AWD.

Yep, the WRX will be a real stormer. I *want* an S2000, but I may buy a WRX, simply because it is more practical, cheaper, and AWD. That, and I don't have to wait until July-August to get the car.
I'm thinking an upgraded intercooler/ball bearing turbo and fuel upgrades should net over 300hp at the flywheel, maybe 350 but I don't know if the internals can take that power level, not to mention the drivetrain. Still, it is a great car for the price.

i took a ugly 5 speed WAGON for a test drive (the stick sedan was out).
I did not like it.... It didn't help that i attempted to get it into 6th at highway speed....heheh..REVERSE... sorry.. used to my car....
To put it away, the sales guy backed it up right into another wrx luckily it was bumper to bumper.
No turbo gauge, truck like shifts (compared to S2000), not very fast at all, but that may be due to low miles and extra weight of the wagon?
They do look pretty cool when lowered though!
