I've heard from some friends who know people in gangs (so take it for what it's worth) that when you're followed by someone at night with no lights on, then they flash your high beams it means you're about to get your ass kicked by a gang (in this case shot at). And if you make it out, you're now initiated in the gang. And if you don't participate, you're on the "hit list"
So maybe they mistook the car? Who knows?
