I am expecting that the prices will increase significantly as we get closer to the Holiday. Last year when I bought the PS2 the prices skyrocketed to over $800 for just the console a few weeks before X-mas.

Xboxes won't be as hard to get as ps2s were last year. The hype is 1/10th that of the ps2. I would be very surprised if you REALLY wanted a Xbox and couldn't find one on the shelves for $300 (and no KY Jelly needed).
Here's an interesting review of the X-Box, and a comparison with the PS2. Pretty technical and in-depth.

The most interesting facet, to me, is the implication of building a very PC-like game console. Developers are already very familiar with that environment, so programming and optimization should have minimal learning curves. IMO, that coupled with MS's previous history suggests a very bright future for the MS equipment. Who knows?
