Ya sure Honda stole your car
It seems that he did not have all the paperwork in order before he left. I guess he needs a lawyer now. It kind of sucks that the dealership said it would be ok, then Honda finance took the car.
If they took the car with his personal mods on it, it is theft is it not? Did he get all of his possessions out of it? Did he get to take his mods off? Also, does Honda Canada Finance have legal rights in the USA? Can a Canadian repo company work in the USA legally, or did they use a US repo company? Can a US repo company repo Canadian property?
Just curious about the answers.
Morally, I think he got screwed. Legally, HCF is probably in the right. Still, why in the world couldn't they work with him a bit? Seriously.
I'd have just said I was going on a vacation or something, or never even told them.
This summer I moved out of my province for four months (temporary work relocation) and my insurance company effectively ended my insurance coverage and refused to insure another car I was buy when I called them up two months later (despite me maintaining a residence in my home province). I've been with them for over five years without a hitch and then they just wanted to drop me like "that!"
I got pretty ticked but managed to get it through their head that it was ridiculous and that I was still, for all intents and purposes, living in my home province (in retrospect, they couldn't send me a registered letter of cancellation of insurance since they didn't have my address so they couldn't have legally cancelled either way
). Either way, it's always a screwup with things like this - I hope the guy with the Type-R can work it through.

Considering Honda Finance returned the car, it would seem the guy was in the right.
If I consistently make payments, the last thing I expect is for my bank to repossess my car, regardless of lease conditions or physical location. It sounds like somebody played the role of pompous asshole at Honda Canada Finance, and was out of line.
