there was a thread almost exactly like this a year or two ago. what kind of music do you like/want to play? if you like metal or hard rock an acoustic wouldn't be a good idea.

 

I'd say acoustic for any kind of music.

You can play it anywhere and well...yeah.

I've been playing for 15 years but don't know jack about "pickups" types of strings, different tunings and stuff like that. I'm just not into the guitar tech type stuff. I like the sound that comes out and having fun.

I just received a Washburn Classical Acoustic/Electric for about $450. It has really close "action", which makes it easier to play. And it also has Nylon strings which give it a warmer tone.

Seriously though I don't think it matters what kinda guitar you get. If you have the motivation to learn and practice everyday you could learn on a cereal box with a stick and a rope attached to it.

 

I had a funny experience today. A kid was showing me acoustics and he told me to sit down and he'd start handing guitars to me. "Play 'em all" he said. "Embarass yourself and make my my ears bleed, but find one that sounds right and feels good in your hands and on your lap." Of course that litte crap head handed me a $2.5k Taylor mixed in with my under $500 request... it sounded glorious though. You can definately tell the difference in feel and sound with solid wood guitars.

I was drawn to the color more than anything then offered this for $499.

I just started a thread like this on wakeboarder.com... I just started playing electric guitar after getting it as a present when I was like 13 (i'm 21 now) and love it.

 

i started playing about a year ago, bought one of the squire strat packs (if i had to do it again i'd just buy the guitar and a decent amp + everything else separate, those packs come with total crap aside from the guitar).

i went through the same decision making process and basically it boiled down to this: I love rock music, and generally don't like acoustic stuff. getting an electric guitar was an easy choice. also, if money is no object, buy both. I've got my original strat and an acoustic/electric - i almost never play the 2nd one, but its there in case i decide to pick it up.

I go through phases. Sometimes I'll play my strats and nothing else, then sometimes I'll do the same with my acoustics. Lately its been acoustic for me.

I don't practice like I used to and sometimes late at night I'll grab my alvarez and sit on the couch and play for a few minutes during Sportscenter.
