Default Yet another annoying pc question

I set up my new pc last week and Im running XP home but the messenger that it has is version 4.2 or something so I went to update it but it just downloaded a new, seperate version instead. So when I go online they both try to log me in and battle it out for a bit and its minor but extremely annoying.

I removed the 4.2 vers prog through the control panel but it is still in program files and wont let me delete it.

Any ideas on how I can get rid of it?

How did you upgrade, Windows Update or directly going to MSN?

Can you delete when you start up in safe mode?

1. Click on the Start button and select Run.
2. Type:

RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%INFmsmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove

in the text box and click OK. You will see a progress bar appear shortly as it deletes its files and it will then ask you to reboot. After the reboot the program will be gone.

That was beyond quick, thanks guys. I haven't tried starting in safe mode, how do I get it to start in safe?

When I go to windows updates it doesn't pick up on it but I d/l the latest vers of media player and that overwrote the prev nps.

Im going to try that now iatacs19, will that delete the 4.2 vers right? Can I just cut and paste it from your post?

Austblue,

IMO, the easiest thing to do would be to uninstall the newer version as well, and see if that removes the files from Program File. If it does, then just reinstall the newer version afterwards and you should be fine.

Btw, how do you know the files in Program Files are for version 4.2 and not the newer version? Just curious...

Also make sure you are logged in as the Administrator account when trying to manually delete the files from Program Files.

Also, I believe the command given by iatacs19 removes MSN Messenger completely, not just version 4.2.

I had already tried removing the new version and starting again cyber and it still just d/l a new copy rather than update/overwrite.

The reason that I knew it was v4.2 was if I hovered over it it displayed something to that affect and same story with the newer version. Also when I activated it through that folder it was the 4.2 v not the newer.

I ran that command last night and it has removed messenger so tonight I'll just d/l the newer version and that should solve everything I hope.

Thanks for the help guys I'll update tonight
