Default Are you working in an industry....

... Related to your field of study?

I'm asking this because a lot of friends/family have careers working in fields completely unrelated to what they studied in college or university (ie, friend of mine studied film at Ryerson but is currently working in the IT field).

How many of you are putting your studies to good use or are currently finding yourself working in a different field altogether?

I'm degreed in Optics (physics degree) with a specialty in laser theory and design. Worked for NASA at MSFC for a while, and really burned out on govt work (don't even get me started on what a waste NASA is).

Took the buyout back in 98 and went into corporate Internet sales, then moved to an IT position at a local telecommunications company.

Now the closest I get to optics is plugging in fiber optics for networks and putting my contacts in in the morning.

I suppose another question I could ask if if you are happy working in your field or if you had your choice, would you pursue something that was directly related to what you studied?

I studied education & now work in that field. With the exception of just a few other careers, I can't imagine doing anything else.

My Masters is in Psychotherapy. Other than volunteer work I never worked in the field. I spent 4 years in the entertainment industry (gaming mostly), several years in upper retail management, and a time as a custom home builder. I have no desire to be a therapist now, but I would like to pick up a new career.
