Another pet peeve of mine.

Seems to happen often with the wait staff all over the place. They servr me a drink, refill, the food order, or whatever and I say "Thank you." In reply I get, "You welcome.", not "You're welcome." For some reason that bugs me.

I also agree with the OP about rude people.
My mom says you welcome. She has been for years. She's a sweet little lady. So if an Insian lady says you welcome to you please don't yell at her.

Right on!!!

Can't people have just a shred of common courtesy or simple human decency anymore?? (He rhetorically asks himself fully aware of the sad truth...)

This happened just today when meeting a few colleagues for lunch. I was outside our main building in a courtyard. My pals were coming out the main entrance. Being a gentleman, one pal holds the door open for the other pal... and the 6 other co-workers behind him. (People from another department.)

NOT ONE PERSON said 'thanks' or any variation thereof. Just walked right through without a care in the word.

It's a cold and sad world? country? city? I live in.

No sweat. I'm generally to damned polite to ever yell at anyone and besides at least they are being polite. I expect it from people who may not have been born here. It's the locals that make me nuts.

Yep. I get that too. I say hello or good morning and they walk right by like zombies. Its ridiculous. Say hello back...is it that hard?

Some cultures don't have a tendency to say thank you for minor gestures of good faith.

i hate when i'm walking out the door in front of a group of people and hold the door and the person behind me just walks out without touching it. then i either have to stand there and hold it for a line of traffic or look like an ass by letting it swing shut on the third guy.

Guess what I did last night??!?

Watching the Flames/Oilers game last night at a local bar, a friend and I were coming back inside from a cigarette and my buddy was holding the door to let me in. We were definitely well before these guys who were about to come out but I decided to wait and let them come out.

As all three of them walked out (having the door held by them for my bud) they each looked up and made eye contact but said nothing. As the last one passed by us while adjusting the cuffs of his jacket this thread came to mind and I belted out a "You're welcome, assholes." Last guy looked back and gave me a funny squishy face look like "Whaaaa? Why'd you say that?" and stopped adjusting his cuffs as we walked inside.

I was very happy with myself. Thank you S2Ki, GPMike, and Scot's son.

It's possible...but I think my machismo overpowered them

Hasn't happened yet though...not a typical sort of thing for me to do at all. I almost always bite my tongue unless people are being rude to somebody else. If I were holding the door I wouldn't have said anything.

*Edit: Did you just threaten me?!??
