Default Youtube of today

Anyone else annoyed with how youtube is turning into a giant patent office? Damn near every video with music in it has been either removed or has had the music changed EVEN if you cite your source.

I for one have had 3 of my videos "banned," 2 because of music copyright (to which I cited the artist, recording company, etc) and 1 because of general photography copyright -- I went to a F1 race up in Canada and recorded the first lap. I also mentioned where it was recorded and any other information that would be needed.

So it seems the next generation of youtube videos will be music-less and will be only recorded in the privacy of your own home as to not infringe on any copyrights. As far as car videos go, I'll be going with streetfire -- F YOU youtube!

As a paying member of BMI, I appreciate YouTube's enforcement. I'd much prefer just a fair-use license offered to people who want to upload videos with BMI's content, but c'est la vie.

"citing the artist" isn't good enough. You must either pay a yearly license fee ($thousands) or ask permission from the author of the song AND the performer, sometimes the same person sometimes not. Then you may still have to pay a fee, depending on if the author, performer or record label wants a fee for it. You can get info on who owns the copyright to a piece of music by contacting ASCAP and BMI.

Just mentioning the author/performer doesn't make it legal to use the music nor does it absolve you from copyright infringement.

Not a catastrophe IMO. I prefer videos where you can hear the sound of the car's engine over videos with loud badly synced rap music. Wiggaz make me lol.

I/We (the band) got a license for a reasonable amount of money. There again, we contribute (our songs) and take (we cover BMI artists songs).

However, that is a performance license, not a synchronization license.

If you think the video is that good, then start here:

The whole copyright infringement arguement is horsepoop. If its a video that nobody is making any money off of it who cares? If "Chocolate Rain" was copyrighted that would have killed all the fun.

So if some couple makes a crappy video of themselves to show at their wedding and uses U2's "Beautiful Day" in the background, does that mean the record company should start crashing wedding receptions and shutting down videos?

Not that someone would make such a cheesy video for their wedding with that song in it. Well, unless their fiance was nagging them to do it. She can be pretty pushy and withhold things you know.

I suppose this is the end of Rick Rolling?

Not on my watch. . . even then, if it's the actual video, it's fair use.

That's copyright for you. All about retaining value for the corporations that own that media.

However I think youtube is making headway with some of the media companies so will have more legitimate music and movies soon.

Ironically, it works well, except in China and here.
