Ohio Insurance and Storage
I called my USAA (insurance company) to drop all of my insurance except comprehensive because my car is in the garage under cover on jack stands and won't be driven until spring. The lady then politely explained that Ohio has the random proof of insurance form that could be mailed to me and that i would essentially be uninsured. Do any of you know if there are provisions to explain that the car is in storage or off the road if by chance I do get this form?
I spoke with a representative of my agent at State Farm. They bascially cut everything except fire and theft and it will cost me only $59 for 6 months coverage. I asked if I could take it out on that rare 71 degree day in February and she said "yes, as long as I call and let them know to reactivate full coverage". Even if it is on their answering machine. She then said to call back at the end of the day and they would revert back to fire and theft only. Hope this helps.

I've heard the same - if there is a good reason for insurance to be 'other-than-full', you're OK. It might just be an extra pain in the a$$ to deal with a typical guvmint agency that can't handle anything out of the ordinary....

I just got off the phone with USAA. In the state of Ohio, if the vehicle is registered, even if the car is in storage, you must have liability on it. If you get the form and you do not have liability coverage on it when you were selected for the random mailing, you can be fined and/or loose you license. If the vehicle has a lien on it, you can't remove liability either. A few years ago, I use to be able to do storage rates with USAA so they are familiar with state by state regulations.
I've also been on USAA for 35 years. They do give you the right poop. However, I do not carry anything but storage insurance. USAA knows when I cease coverage and they have records and so do I. It wouldn't be wide to then caught without it, however. I'll take my chances and can depose neighbors and friends to that effect, if necessary. I have 13 vehicles and have never been random sampled - but then who knows. Remember, always challenge authority - particualrly if you know you are in the right!! It's just a dumb law and it's illogical.
