My general rules:

Dress comfortable. Comfy shorts or pants, a long sleeve tee, and good walking shoes. No hat. Sunglasses if it's sunny, get a strap to hold them. The pants/shorts should have a sealable pocket or two (sipper, velcro, button, etc). You don't want to lose something on the ride or get picked. Don't carry anything you don't need (I usually carry $20-30, ID, car keys, my phone, and a post it note with where I parked my car).

Put sunblock on before you go in even if it's cloudy. If you want to take pictures, get a small disposable. Things in your hands/pockets tend to get crushed.

Don't drink the night before.

There's only one place to park, really, unless you want to walk ten miles just to get there. It's $10 from what I remember.

I was pissed the first time I went there and didn't upgrade. Plus you will still have some waiting in line. The bigger rides offer reserved slots too. Oh, and don't expect to breathe on the Millenium Force. It isn't physically possible.
