Default a *true* impromptu drive :D

Paul's impromptu drive has picked up a lot of steam so before we clear that thread out after it's over, I figured I'd post up this new temporary thread and am unintentionally competing with it .

Part of the picnic drive is tentatively planned on being a back by-way that runs between the Foster Lake area of Highway 20 and Highway 22 near Marion Forks. It's called Quartzville Road (aka Forest Road 11). I tried to explore it on the way back from Astoria, but encountered numerous downed trees (with room to go around) and debris on the road before coming across a snowdrift about 4 miles in from the Hwy 22 side.

I *finally* got ahold of someone at the Sweet Home ranger service who confirmed that the road is now passable and another ranger just took it on his motorcycle. They said there is still some debris but the road should be clear of trees as of last Thursday's report.

Since I've never been on the road and it's rated a top road for motorcyclists in oregon, I wanted to check it out before the picnic and get a feel for the conditions. If any of you wanted to join, I'm planning on doing it this weekend (Saturday 7/19) since I am not going to be joining on the Dam drive and Teresa is going to be up in St. Helens visiting her family anyway.

I'm planning on the FOLLOWING ROUTE

Not too particular on the start point, but I was thinking of treking up to Marion Forks, taking the road up and over to Foster Lake, and then enjoying Hwy 20 back to the 126->22 junction. A long drive for you valley folk, but if anyone is interested in joining up who isnt going on Paul's drive, let me know. If it works out better, I'm up for heading to Foster Lake first and going up and coming out on 22. I get to enjoy Hwy 20 either way.

Probably a late morning drive (10-11ish for the start of Quartzville from Marion Forks, or 1ish from Sweet Home) with lunch probably in Sweet Home.

Ahh, I would go but I will not be in town this weekend. Let me know how the roads look. I may take my new car out there if it is not too bad
