I usually use the technique of "Make it move without using the accelerator". I also ask them to hold the accelerator at arbitrary rev count so they get a feel for how much twitchier a manual's throttle tends to be.
Seems like the key is learning to operate the clutch with low revs before learning to do it with high revs. But that's just my experience. Would also probably help minimize clutch cooking
