Out of curiosity, who has driven both AP1 and AP2.
I've been test driving S2000's since 2000.

Only one I haven't driven from a dealer is the CR. Back in 2006, before my neighbor (who wrote for Oregon Drive Time) moved away he let me drive a 2006 pretty extensively so I really get a good feel for it on the back roads for about 30 minutes.

That was the time when I decided to upgrade to the AP2 tranny.

Have you driven an 04 or 05 much?

The 04/05 models drive much different then the 06+ because of the drive by wire. The throttle feel is way different. I am a little biased but I prefer the mechanical throttle much more.

The 02 I drove I liked a lot. There were just a few things that were improved upon in the AP2 that made me buy my 05.

If I were to get another S I would have a hard time picking between an 03 and an 05. Best model years IMO. 03 because it is the last of the 9k and 05 because it is the last of the AP2 with mechanical throttle

I've driven both and at least in stock form AP1's are more fun to drive than AP2's. Stiffer suspension, bigger sways, faster steering rack, and 9k are where its at. I will admit that AP2's have a way better tranny though.

Actually it was because of the DBW in the 2006 which made my wanted to try it more extensively than your usual dealer test drives.

It does feel quite a bit of difference especially right after a back to back drive after the Ap1. I'm not saying its bad or good, but its different. Can't quite think of words to describe the difference w/o sounding bias towards one or another.

As for 04-05, the difference isn't as drastic when I drove it at the dealers, which to me was a good thing. If only they had made/tuned the AP2 with the 2.2 liter capable of revving up to 9K and made power all the way to red line, it would be a superior car. However, at 8K, I prefer the AP1 with properly geared tranny and FD.

To AP2's credit, more torque under the curve is very delicious.
