Default New S2000 owner in Vancouver Wa.

Hi Everyone,
I just acquired my fist S2000 about a month ago. I mostly DIY, but would like to know which mechanics/performance shops do you trust to work on your S2000. I just recently had new studs pressed in my front wheel hubs and used a Subaru Performance shop here in Vancouver. In the future I would like to get it serviced by folks who know a bit more about the s2000. Also, are there any reputable Tuners here in the Portland/Vancouver area?
Thanks
Gino

From notes here over the years you need a high flow cat (or cat delete) to lower VTEC enough for any significant increase in power. Hondata FlashPro can handle your 2006 car's ECU. Don't know your smog test requirements but FlashPro can reset/set as often as you want to handle tests.

Finding a shop conversant with the S2000 is rare. Few Honda dealers are knowledgeable.

2006 cars (drive by wire) are liable to have tight valves which will burn them. Recommend you check and adjust them before thinking of "tuning." Good photo essay in the library here.

Thank you for the info on the Hondata and HFC. I was going to start researching how to lower the VTEC engagement point just a bit.

Funny you should mention valve adjustment. Amazon just delivered my valve adjustment tool yesterday.

The challenge I am currently having is a stubborn crankshaft pulley bolt. Using the Honda tool to hold the pulley, I hit it with my impact gun, and the bolt basically laughed at it. Then I tried a 25” breaker bar with a floor jack handle as a cheater. I think it giggled and told me to cut it out. I will try the cold compressed air trick later on today or tomorrow.

My VTEC has been lowered to 3600 rpm which transformed the car. I like to run 3d and 4th gears on the back roads here and power is always just under my right foot. 3d gear rpms nearly match engine rpms: 6000 rpm in 3d is 60 mph and normal VTEC just wakes up there. 3600 rpm in 3d is 36 mph. Note you'll lose "VTEC Yo!" as there's not nearly the power jump at 3600 as at 6000 rpm.

Adjust the valves to their MAXIMUM tolerances as they tighten in use. You can set the exhaust 0.001 over max (0.012") with no ill effects.

A buddy and I broke the yoke on my my 24 inch 1/2" breaker bar. Welded it at 90° and got the crank pulley bolt off with two of us and (I swear) 6 foot extensions. Not sure what we used to hold the crank but it took two of us. I have a 3/4" breaker bar for the rear axle nut re tightening.

More on the Hondata and VTEC. Were you able to change the VTEC engagement point yourself, or is An experienced Tuner recommend? My S2k is NA, with upgraded exhaust and intake. I will add an HFC to get the most bang for my buck if I take it to a Tuner.

I assumed I could change the VTEC engagement by simply typing whatever rpm I wanted into the block on the screen in FlashPro -- seems simple. Isn't 'cuz there are a zillion other changes that are needed.

My car was remotely tuned by Gernby who used to be a member here/sponsor. His posts should still be here. He devoted months into researching these cars and how to improve their performance without supercharging. Tuning process took two weekends running test calibrations and exchanging data. I apparently did this back in May 2015 -- 8 years ago! Still running strong.

Thanks for the info Chuck!

BTW, the crankshaft bolt broke loose by getting the car up to operating temp then cooling the bolt with a can of air for 20 seconds trick. Now I need to barrow a torque wrench at the auto parts store. Mine only goes up to 150 ft lbs.

thanks again.
