I think if he's gotten 5 years out of that battery, it's not going to last much longer - even with a charge.

Sometimes when I start my car in cold weather and after I depress the clutch pedal I hear a scratching noise coming from the engine somewhere. Larry, you know what that's all about??
i could be wrong... but whenever i start my car and it's been really cold outside, when i let the clutch out the idle drops and the engine starts shaking (scratching?) like it wants to die... and sometimes it actually does die. from what i've read it's fairly normal and the result of a weak stock battery. i was told to hold the gas pedal in just a tad bit as you start the engine and hold the idle steady at about 2k rpms for a few seconds. works for me....

i've been thinking though, it seems kind of weird... whenever i'd start my integra when it was really cold, the engine would idle at about 2k rpms on it's own... "cold start." seems weird to me that my s2000 wouldn't do this as well? maybe there's something wrong with my car... ???

no, it's pretty normal, there's some threads somewhere about resetting the ECU when the fuel changes or seasons change, I just tap the throttle a little and then let it warm up.

Everytime I start mine up it idles at about 2k on it's own. I drive mine on a regular basis tho. I drove it in the snow just fine with stock tires the last time it snowed about a week ago. Didn't drive it in todays stuff tho had my bro's civic.
