Following our last installment, we took a 4 day Nile cruise on a sailboat. Of course we had no internet connection during that time.
Following that we stayed in a small village which had no internet as well as a few remote hotels that had poor service. So, we were unable to keep you up-to-date.
Here is what has transpired –
Thanksgiving found us visiting some interesting sites in Cairo. We started with the 11th century Muhammad Aly Alabaster Mosque on a hill overlooking the city.
Our next stop was the “hanging church”. This church dates to 424 AD. Certainly the oldest church we have ever seen. It was built across the top of a large roman column – hence the name. The detail work inside was astounding.
..
We also stopped off at the Khan el Khalili Bazaar – one of the oldest bazaars in the middle east. This place looked familiar and has been the location for countless movies.
It was nice to see that you could even buy genuine Nike products here in the bazaar!

What would a trip to Egypt be without a visit to the great pyramids of Giza? That’s just what we did on Friday.
We also visited the Sphinx.
In the afternoon we spent 3-1/2 hours in the Egyptian Museum seeing all the important archaeological artifacts, including the King Tut exhibit. And that was very impressive. Unfortunately they don’t allow cameras in the museum.

After an overnight sleeper train to Luxor, we began a 4 day cruise of the Nile River on a large sailboat. This was an outstanding trip, and included stops along the way to see archaeological sites, small villages, etc.
Sunrise on the Nile:
Sunset on the Nile:
Along the way, we stopped off at a camel market! It was outstanding and like going back in time 100 years… 1,000 years…. or even further in time.

Upon arrival in Aswan, we toured the unfinished obelisk and then did a camel trek on the desert out to an 11th century monastery.
The "unfinished obelisk":
We start our desert trek:
It may not be an S2000, but it IS a "green" machine!
St. Simon's Monastery:
Bedouin bandits on the horizon? Or more tourists? You decide:
My camel was a real handsome fellow (smiling for the camera):
That evening we stayed in a colorful hotel in a small Nubian village.

Friday found us in Luxor, visiting some out of the many temples.
Roof and beam detail:
A cute character from the past:
This hieroglyphic is on a beam in a 3,500 year old temple. Notice the helicopter, submarine and small airplane? Proof positive of the "Alien influence" on the early Egyptians!

On Saturday we started off with a dawn hot-air balloon ride over the Valley of the Kings.
Heading out over the desert:
We then visited three temples in the Valley of the Kings. They were spectacular in near perfect condition and in full color – almost like the day they were made (unfortunately cameras were not allowed). We visited many tombs and temples this day, including Karnak – the world’s largest temple.
Queen Hatsupset's Temple:
Ramses II Temple:
