Thumbs down Lapping Afternoon

Right now Luc has 10 people. Mikey9krpm and I are going. Gropos is on a roadtrip. A few more S2000's wouldn't be a burden Here are the specifics.

- Sept. 11 from 5:30pm till 7:30pm
- Shannonville Nelson Track
- approximatly $60 (or less)

Nelson is an OK track, although I prefer the Long Track then Fabi. Luc basically runs an open track, with controlled passing. Everyone is good for going at you're own pace and letting people pass, so no stress for newbies.

I'll forward the contact info to anyone who is interested.

The track has already been reserved, and the deposit is basically being covered by us early birds. Technically, people could show up last minute, but confirming sooner is better all around.

Nelson is the slowest (besides the kart config) track at Shannonville. The track is flat and a good novice learning track, well all of Shannonville is good for learning proper cornering. Here is my S2000 specific hot lap description of Nelson with the extra S-curve.

Start: Beginning off front straight, in 2nd gear from last turn. Shift to 3rd mid-straight.

Turn 1: 100 degree fast right turn sweeper just after pit exit. Watch for merging traffic. With R-compounds, I suspect this turn could be taken at WOT, but haven't had the guts to try yet. Otherwise a quick lift or brake tap before turn in, start from the left slowly drift to right curb and drift out back left to next straight.

Turn 2: Depending on how much speed is carried through Turn 1 a quick shift to 4th is required, otherwise just leave it 3rd with a small coast at redline. This is the fastest top speed, from 130-160 kph before the heaviest braking zone. Make sure to scrub off enough speed to make a tighter than expected 90 degree right turn. This is where most people have speed management issues. Downshift to or stay in 3rd (downshift to 2nd if aggressive). Slow in and late apex this turn to a very short straight.

Turn 3: Short burst on the throttle, a brake tap and then a lazy right, slightly accelerating in the turn.

Turn 4: Shift or stay in 3rd and transition to the right side of the straight. Short braking zone, (downshift to 2nd if aggressive). This the hardest turn, and decreases in radius, so the apex is deceptively late. Turn left. Resist the urge to turn in too quickly and clip the first "false" apex corner. Apex the second curb corner and exit on the right side.

Turn 5: Shift or stay in 3rd and accelerate to the left side of the curving straight. Just short of redline, about 110-130 kph, hard on the brakes and downshift 2nd. Turn in right and lock steering position and balance throttle through hairpin.

Turn 6: The exit of 5 into 6 forms a tall backwards "S". Swing from left to right while squeezing the throttle in a controlled manner before a long tap of the brakes before left turn in. Set steering for left hairpin. This is the portion of the track where a S2000 should make time on other cars by carrying more speed through the linked hairpins. You should be able to feel the car set in the turn and pull max lateral G's.

Turn 7: Short straight before a right turn. Short acceleration, short brake and simple right. Pit entrance is just after the turn and easy to miss.

Turn 8: Only place with a concrete pit wall to hit. The corner has been repaved and greatly straightened out the turn. Can turn in early to extend the front straight and get quickly on the throttle. With the repaving you have to be stupid with the throttle or not paying attention to the line to end up in the wall.

Here is Shannonville info from the Saab school web site. There are directions, track maps and hot lap descriptions.

Darcy,

If you want to go, you should PM me. Apparently, the max. limit has been reached, although some begging would probably get a person in.

There have been a few drop outs, so there are a few slots left.

Our group has joined up with another that had Fabi. We are now doing the long track, with around 20-25 cars. The long track is my favourite Shannonville config, and there will be a lot of track time for around $60.
