Default Alternator needs replacement?

Happens when at a stop or driving low RPM style. My instrument cluster fades (faintly, but noticeably) in and out. Dark to light, but very faintly.

Had my trust Honda guy (Glen Love @ Bellevue Honda) take a look at it. Linked up this fancy Honda tablet PC kinda deal to the car and my car showed steady lines. Looked like an EKG thingy for a car. 14.6 something volts consistent. Love tells me anything above 13.8 is good.

But still, the instrument cluster is doing weird things, but he suspects it's the alternator. The fluctuations are so sensitive, the instrument cluster is the only one showing affect v. other electrical components in the car.

Anyone experiencing the same thing? Thoughts?

TIA,
Ben

Sounds more like a short in the cluster to me.

My battery died a while back and the cluster lit fine on <12 volts in the battery with the engine off. I don't think it's that sensitive. My experience has been that the stereo head unit (and amps if you have them) is one of the most sensitive things to low voltage - if that's not showing an effect I'd be looking elsewhere from the alternator.

Would you like someone to post this in the Under the Hood section? Might get more views there.

Mark, that's what I'm thinking. It's going to have to require a replacement.

So much for Honda reliability. I easily exceed the "severe" maintenance plan for this car (i.e. I treat it well), yet this crap happens. I did not modify the car in any way whatsoever other than an exhaust and suspension.

Disappointing!

I don't think Honda makes the voltage regs ........ better go reprimand your Korean cousins for that stuff (or maybe my Taiwan brotheren is to blame )
