Building your own home...
I have a friend who is a builder\contractor but I utilized him too much and the way he does thing is all in his head! He was going to build a house for me last year but estimates went over budget. Currently he is way too busy and I don't want to ask for his help unless I really need it.
So I'm curious if any of you here has build your own home.
I plan on contracting every thing out - might do the floors and tile work myself. From what I'm reading and insight from my buddy it doesn't seem very hard...but easier said then done!
This is in Snohomish County. Already did the leg work and got my permit but might change design plans.

i don't recommend it unless you're retired and have nothing better to do
If you are not divorced/insane/broke/paranoid, you will be before its finished ...
Friends and relative have told me that there are three rules:
1. Pick a design, make absolutely NO modifications, upgrades additions;
2. Make sure the contractor understands the entire details, get it in writing, with penalty clauses in the contract;
3. Go away (Mexico? Australia?) for 4+ months, only returning when the entire house is done.

I have built quite a few homes myself and it is a time consuming process. If you are not working, then you could take it on but if you have another job....then a couple of hours every night takes its toll.

Being in the midst of a MASSIVE renovation project where I'm acting as the prime contractor (and doing most of the demolition myself), I think it CAN be done...but whether it SHOULD or not is an entirely different project.
In order to do the job right, you really need to know the business, be comfortable with dealing with contractors, and either write out very clear and complete requirements OR have the time to oversee the project.
Also, you need to be sure to structure the pay for any of the projects in such a way that it incents the subs to maintain the quality that you want and keep the deadlines.
Whatever you decide...good luck.
