Default Doh!

So I'm changing the oil on my Element today. I drain the old oil, replace the plug, and torque it down. Then I remove the old filter, spin on the new filter, and tighten it up. Then I dump in 5 qts of oil. But this is all on a slope, so I drive the car about half a block to where it's flat so I can check the dipstick.

The car suddenly makes a really odd sound, and the the oil light comes on and so does the MIL. I shut the car off. Sure enough, there is oil all over the place. Damn.

Turned out that the gasket from the old filter stuck to the engine block and I forgot to check that. So the filter spun off and dumped all the oil. What a mess.

I had to take the S2000 down to the auto parts store and buy more oil. Good thing it wasn't raining, since I have no tread on those tires.

Car seems fine now. I hope.

Always a concern of mine that I will mess up on something that seems so simple and have done MANY times. Glad to hear you caught it and hopefully nothing permanent happened to the Element.

Doesn't sound like the motor was running long enough to do any real damage. What a mess though

kinda reminds me when my dad and I forgot to put on the oil cap once. My dad told me to to take it around the block a bit and I decided to be a dumbass and rev my mom's camry a bit. LOL oil was EVERYWHERE!!!

On my dads 84 Nissan p/u, I changed the oil (not on a slope), I didn't put the drain plug back on.

Was spun partway off. Enough so all the oil was pumped out.

Thinking the extra gasket just got "blown" out of the way.
