Default Engine pinging

I'm getting pinging from the engine at low RPM (2500 - 3500) and mid to full throttle (of coarse), but no CEL light. Any suggestions how I should go about diagnosing this? It was my understanding that engine management would detect this and retard timing to prevent it. So whatever sensor(s) are used to detect this must not be working, but that would trigger the CEL, right? What am I missing?

Also FWIW, I'm getting quite a bit of soot on my exhaust tips.

Wow, if what you are hearing is indeed detonation be really careful. Detonation is pretty hard to hear on this engine so it's got to be severe if you are easily hearing it
If the sound isn't really pinging, it might be the timing chain tensioner deal.
Good Luck!

Hmmn, it's not a mechanical rattle like the timing chain tensioner is described. It's more like a ping or ring from the engine. And it's only in that RPM and throttle range. Seems less pronounced after the engine warms up. It's easily audible, but maybe I'm just tuned to it now.

your cel should blink everytime there is knocking. and that sensor is EXTREMELY sensitive. r u sure you are hearing the knocking? if you are 100% sure its knocking take it to a shop right away. knocking will destroy your motor.

I'm sure I'm hearing what I'm describing. I'm not sure the cause. I'm sure the CEL is not coming on.

I'm open to other suggestions as to the cause of the noise. I just don't know of any other potential causes, nor how to diagnose.

If the TCT is bad it still should only be making noise when the oil pressure is low.
