Default Freaking Pickup Trucks!

Those of you on my FB already saw the picture... but ugh. Here's the story.

Was headed home after work, going past the Lowes at the Landing in Renton. light ahead was red, bunch of cars in front of me, I stopped just past the entrance/exit into the Lowes parking lot. Chilling out, all cool. A big garbage truck drives over in the next lane. Next thing I know, I get rear-ended by an older dude, driving a Silverado diesel, and his eyes don't look in the same direction. Told me he got distracted, was looking at the garbage truck, and once the garbage truck passed the parking lot he pulled out. Right into me.

Given me = lowered S2000 and him = big truck, I can kinda see that happening... but still!!!!

At least he was insured and apologetic about it, so that's nice. Of course his truck barely had any damage.

I'm with Geico. My "official" estimate is next Wednesday at Kirmac Collision in Bellevue. I also plan on taking it to Mcleod and National Auto Collision to get two other estimates. Anything else I should do?

I guess I need to decide if I pocket the money and find some used parts, or hand the check over to a shop and have them take care of everything. Any suggestions/tips?

My car: dented the quarter panel, bumper, cracked taillight, and paint scratch on the CR wing.

His truck:

Damn that sucks dude! I wonder what steps will be taken to fix the rear quarter panel since its not a bolt on replacement, if it will be repaired or cut/welded/painted.

Don't take a check. Get recommendations, find a shop that will fix it the way YOU want, and have them bill his insurance. He was at fault, there's no reason to do what HIS insurance tells you. I've been through this before, don't let anybody tell you that you can't have it fixed wherever you want.

Poor truck? it will buff out. Screw trucks.

I'm going to take it to a few body shops today to get estimates. From the feedback I'm getting, sounds like I should let the shop handle it. Here's my list of shops so far:

- National Auto Collision
- Queen City Auto Rebuild
- RNR Automotive
- Mcleod Auto Body
- Stage Auto

So I guess I'll get all these estimates and take them with me to my adjuster when I meet him on Wednesday.

I already filed a claim, so I guess I'll end up using my collision coverage, and then geico will go get the money from the other guy's insurance, right? Never dealt with this before.

I'd say just take it to 3 shops for estimates. If McLeod did good work on your lip they would be my first choice since you know their work. That really sucks man. Also make sure his insurance pays for everything.

Personally I wouldn't pocket a check unless you are willing to be really patient, know pretty well what the cost of the repair will be, and won't spend the money on other things in the meantime. It's even riskier since there's QP damage. Sorry man but good look with the repair, really hoping this doesn't screw with the track day!

we had a similar thing happen to us recently and ran into a few problems taking the check from the insurance company.

the work that was done was sub-par to me. I called the repair shop out on it and they were complete dicks about it. they denied everything when its pretty obvious that they did a really poor job wet sanding the newly painted area. you can still see the orbital marks they left.

the issue came from when we tried to get our insurance company involved. The shop misrepresented themselves as a geico preferred shop when they clearly are not. As such, Geico would not gaurentee the work nor would they step in to help us get it rectified.

In the future im going to just let the insurance company deal with it as long as they have a gaurentee/warranty on their work. it wasnt worth the headache and the stress of dealing with a dishonest shop.

food for thought: you pay insurance for a reason. let them handle the legwork and do the fighting.
