Passport is the accepted international standard. I don't see why they would want more than that -- that's what a passport is for!
You must have looked suspicious, Mikey.
Passport should be all you need.

Funny. I went there last winter with a passport and a drivers license. I guess nowadays they want a license, a passport AND a birth certificate. They let me through, but after a good half hour of BS and questioning in the "special guy" room. (to get into Canada from WA I should add).
CUSTOMS OFFICER: Citizenship?
MIKEY: U.S. Fcuking-A.
CUSTOMS OFFICER: Papers please?
MIKEY: Yeah, these are the right ones. Notice that they aren't fake?
CUSTOMES OFFICER: Please pull over there, eh. This will take a few minutes. Do you have allergies to latex?

Crossed the border into Canadia on Sunday. The woman in the booth started asking me all kinds of questions. Well, many of them were the same question, asked in different ways. How long will you be here, what will you be doing, how long will you be staying, where will you be staying, do you have reservations, how many days of vacation are you taking (seriously, she asked me that), what are you bringing into Canada.... She also asked me twice if I was hot, and said I looked "sweaty and flushed". I had just driven several hours in a convertible with the top down in cool weather, and I had gel-type sunscreen on. Guess she must have thought I was on drugs or scared or something.
Anyway, she asked the final question, "what do you do for a living" and, as always, as soon as I said I was an engineer she said, "OK, go on through." Engineers must be really boring to customs agents. Or are they just really boring to everyone?
On the way home, it was a nice three question conversation with a very pretty US agent, and off I went. I was kind of disappointed -- I would have liked to have talked to her some more! (One of the questions they both asked was if I drove "that car" on the track. I told both of them that my reason for visiting Canada was to take a recreational driving school at the Mission racetrack.)
Both ways the only ID I had to show was my passport.
