Replacement softtop
Hi,
I have a 2003 S2000, and it's developed a little hole on the right side, oh, just NW of the top-left of the passenger side window. I've had it patched at Ted's upholstery for $20, thinking I've do that and save up for a new top. But Ted's tells me that the patch will start pulling off after about five or six openings and closings, so I'm thinking I should probably bite the bullet and replace the top now. Ted's will charge $2,500 with tax included. (I'm told by Ted's there's not much more one can do other than patch it or replace it.) Is that about right, or are there other places in the Seattle area (I live in South Snohomish County) that will do a good job for less? Please let me know. Please respond to either of these e-mails:
rickhornung@aaparty.com or thatbikingguy@gmail.com.
Thank you!
Rick
Jeez, that's a ton of cash.
Something more reasonable would be $1500-$1600 installed for an OEM top (that allows 7-9 hours at $100 per). You can get an OEM top for $700-$800.
I did mine myself...and did a DIY in the Under the Hood secion (pinned in the FAQ)

There's no way this job is worth paying someone $700-$900 to do it. It is pretty easy overall...it just takes time. With the Seattle weather relatively pleasant, this should be easy for you.
That $2500 price is basically paying someone over $1700 to put in your top. That's just a rip.

yes, over priced. OEM & robbins top 700-800. EZ-on think is 400-500. Install should run 600-800. I once was quoted $600 to install robbins top this year. Still have my OEM top which developed a very small wear point, in which I could see sunlight creeping through.
If its a small rip buy some HH-66 vinyl cement and soft top patch (ppl are selling patches from their old top for a small fee) just use the HH-66 and patch it up.
HH-66 works very well as it is a vinyl to vinyl adhesive, flexible, temp resistance, and water proof.

I was told by a local upholstery shop to use DAP Weldwood HHR contact cement, but I tried DAP weld wood contact cement non HHR(from lowes) with no luck, the HH-66 works really well, I recommend it over contact cement.
Convertibles Only is where I would go, its right near the space needle down town. I got my top patched there and had excellent service. I also got quoted for a replacement top and it was a lot less then $2500, I think it might have been under 2k. They had a pricing book for different kinds of cars/tops, so it should be easy to call and get a quote. They are very highly regarded, while I was there they were putting a top on a '60s Jag E Type, and numerous Ferrari's. An employee told me that they do all the top work for Ferrari of Seattle, so I think they can handle S2000s, and they told me they have replaced S2000 tops many times.
I agree that is overpriced. Replacing the top yourself is a bit time consuming but its really not difficult. I replaced the top on my first AP1 after I received a quote that left me wondering if it would be cheaper to get a hardtop instead. So I went ahead and decided to do the work myself. I used the DIY guide posted above and it went smoothly. I'm getting prepared to replace the top on my second AP1 sometime this weekend or maybe next. Since I know what to expect, it should go by fairly quickly.
