I don't know if Canada border requires a passport, the US will by that time but if you are US citizens do you still need a passport to get back into your own country? I don't know.

You can go into Canada without any problems. You probably just have to show your I.D. and tell them where you're going.
To come back, you need a passport or enhanced driver's license. Effective June 1st.
[QUOTE]ENTRY/EXIT REQUIREMENTS: Entry into Canada is solely determined by Canadian Border Services Agency (CBSA) officials in accordance with Canadian law . Canadian law requires that all persons entering Canada carry both proof of citizenship and proof of identity. A valid U.S. passport, passport card or NEXUS card (see below) satisfies these requirements for U.S. citizens. If U.S. citizen travelers to Canada do not have a passport, passport card or approved alternate document such as a NEXUS card, they must show a government-issued photo ID (e.g. Driver

Also, I wouldn't try to get back into the country with just a regular drivers license. It doesn't prove citizenship at all, so unless you have your birth certificate with you too, you're pretty much screwed. Getting a passport isn't hard, isn't that expensive, and doesn't take all that long. I don't see any reason to not have one, myself.
