Yeah, it's sort of a counter-intuitive thing but if you can think of the coil spring as a wound up torsion spring then it becomes apparent. Given two torsion spring rods of the same wire diameter (a long one and a short one), the shorter one will be stiffer (in bending and torsion), linearly no less
ie cut off 2 live coils out of 10 and you're 20% stiffer ..... go figure

Now taking a torch to the springs while they're still installed on the car (we did this in HighSchool all the time ), now you got problems
