Tranny Issues from Pacific Raceways?
Hi Folks,
I was at Pacific Raceways for the first time with the S2k, the day went pretty well as we got a lot of track time with the Proformance crew. There was a bit more traffic in the morning as everyone went out at the same time, but I got a good feel for the car and was beginning to get a bit more comfortable.
Unfortunatly, once I began upping the pace a little, the tranny stopped shifting! I was on my way down the front straight at the kink shifting from 4 to 5 and it wouldn't go. I had to jam it back into 4th after trying for quite a bit and slowly get back into the paddock.
At first, I thought it may have been an overheated clutch. But after letting it cool down, the car shifted fine idling. It would go into 1st gear no problem, but a bit notchy going into the others. I went out and drove around on the street and it was very difficult to get it into gears 3-6th. I would have to wait for the RPMs to drop below 1200 to basically crunch it into gear. But once in, the clutch works fine, and the car drives normal (no odd sounds).
Doing some searching on the forums here, it appears that owners have seen issues with driving at high speeds for long periods of time. I saw posts from one owner regarding oil pressure from the tranny oil pump going to 0psi when making left turns. That sounds an awful lot like what I was doing at PR (driving at high speeds then turning left a lot).
Has anyone else seen this issue with tracking driving on our local counter clockwise tracks (PR, SRP)? I'm about half way through in pulling the tranny out (Big PITA from doing it for the first time on an S2000), and trying to find a replacement. But I would like to know if there is some sort of remedy to the problem if this is indeed a common issue.
Also, if anyone knows of any trannys for sale locally, I would appreciate any tips/help. I found a couple from owners of other states, but I am unfamilar with truck freight shipping. (U Fix It has one for 2500, which is the same price that discount Honda parts dealers want for new)
TIA!!
Derek

Never happened to me at PR, but at Thunderhill I lost 5th for an hour and half or so, and now, after Spokane, my first gear is notchy.

And at least one more recent one that I can't find where RT slaps me down for not having TSB 02-046 pasted to my forehead.
I'm getting ready to have my tranny, clutch, and diff fluids changed, and seeing if they'll do TSB 02-046.
Good luck,
Ted

Thanks 2000celicaspeed. I've already been in contact with zo6killer and one other forum member. The issue now is shipping from them to me. I don't have any truck freight experience and its been a struggle trying to arrange shipping.
Ted - Thanks for the links, I'll go through them! I think I'll also throw in a new clutch while it's apart. Which one are you going with?

Ted,
Just read the links you posted. Unfortuantly, I don't think this is the same issue. It started off being hard to get into 5th, but it wouldn't get into any other gear either. And it's not a mechanical device preventing it from going in.. it is the gears grinding that is preventing the shifts. When it finally shifts, it is accompanied with a gear crunch.
My case sounds more like the tranny oil pump lubrication issue instead. Like the starvation of oil to the bearings causing failure:

Pulled the tranny out last night. I will try to pull the clutch off the flywheel tonight or Saturday morning to inspect for damage. I'll be 100% sure that it's a broken tranny once I see the clutch.
Ted, any suggestions on a replacement clutch? I was thinking of just a new stock one since I wasn't planning on drag racing or increasing power output by very much. Mostly road course driving.

I'm no clutch (or much else!) expert.
I had mine replaced via TSB 054 at 7500 miles with another stock one, so now I'm up to 30,000 miles on the 'new' one, with 12 or so track days. No drag racing, only a couple of real launches.
There are a lot of clutch/PP/flywheel options out there, but I couldn't tell you which ones are worth considering. Sorry.

I've been using the ACT PP w/ the stock disk and it seems to be a great combo ....... no slipping probs but clutch pedal is a little harder to actuate.
BTW, I've been overfilling the tranny by 1/4 quart or so ever since the early days when the starvation problem was identified. Also, don't be shy w/ the grease on the tranny input shaft splines, throw-out bearing sleeve or the actuating fork on reassembly or you'll be reliving the PITA in short order
