Default Used 2002 Question

What can I say, I'm looking at my options right now, because the Contour is starting to drive me crazy...not to mention the various rental/loaner cars while the Contour has been in the shop lately.

What do any of you think would be a fair price to pay for a used 2002 S2000 with about 2500 miles on it?

I can't afford a new S2000 right now, but maybe...just MAYBE I could manage a used one if the price were right.

Doubtful, but worth a try. Anyway, any input is appreciated...

Hey Brant -

Use your frustration for good. Break down and get one now! hehe

Interesting question. Considering that I was too impatient to do MY deal the right way... here's what I should have done.

Investigate those dealers "out in the boonies" who have had cars sitting. There have been a few threads with new cars going for 29,500 or so new. Subtract a few $$$ for being broken in by someone else and I'd pay somewhere around 27K or so for a slightly used 2002. The likelyhood of getting one around here is pretty low for that price so it's time to start checking out the rest of the country. Even if it means shipping the car over in a closed container for around a grand or so, you'll still be dollars ahead!

Happy Hunting!

I guess this experience is kind of good for me...lets me practice my skills in patience, which I am not historically known for...

I would think that the difference between a used 02 and a new 02 would be negligible since dealerships tend to up the price anyways and treat these cars like collectibles, no matter what year. But, if you want to try dealerships out in the boonies, I know of a couple pretty good ones - it all depends on how far you want to drive.

Also, there is a 02 Silver/Red at the local place that a salesman try to sell me "at a discount" (probably because they can't sell it around here). Of course, that was before he knew my "Mistress" was in the shop for an oil change.

I think the max price for an used S2000 is $30,000.

Carlson, thanks. I was thinking that ballpark, too.

I'm not so much worried about what dealerships/people are ASKING...just what a reasonable price would be.

This at least gives me a baseline to run some numbers...

OK, here is what you do:

Go to the "Group buys and For Sale" forum and post a new topic; WTB: 2002 S2000

In the thread, post that you are interested in purchasing a new or used 2002 S2000, and have those interested, dealers or not, to email you. This is what I would have done if I new about this site before purchasing my s2k. You have these random car salespersons from all across the US that just are having trouble moving their dealership's new s2k, so they come across this site, and offer a new one for like 29,500, and often have a couple at that price!

good luck,
Bryon

Bryon,

Great idea. That is actually something I would do as a next step. The reason I have not gone in that direction so far, or even posted outside the PacNorthwest forum, is that I'm not at the point right now where I could comfortably commit to a purchase and need to have my own financials better sorted out.

This was more of a feeler at a generic level about what a reasonable price would be. Realistically I think I'm currently looking at December before I could commit to a purchase and a lot can change in the marketplace between now and then.

Thanks for your input!

Brant!

brant,

there is a silver/black s2000 at bellevue honda that's been sitting there for a couple of weeks. my friend bought a civic yesterday over there and noticed that there was NO MARKUP listed on that car. so starting point for negotiations is at MSRP. you might be able to deal that down a couple thousand considering its been on the lot for a while. i don't know if you've already looked there but its worth a shot. i think kirkland honda has some on the lot as well. if you go to bellevue, ask for JC. Ben sent me to him and he was a good guy to deal with. tell JC either mike (me) or ben sent you (both with silver/black s2000).

or...if you want a yellow '01, there's one at acura of lynnwood and my close buddy is a salesman there. its listed at $33k+ (unbelieveable) but my friend will certainly take care of you and try to deal down as much as possible for you. his name is andrew, tell him mike sent you.

hope this helps at all...

mike

I'm in a tight spot right now. The downpayment that I had safely tucked away is no longer safe. Basically, I'm out of the market for a while longer...but thank you very much for keeping your eyes open and passing this on!
