VAFC 2
i had k-pro on my DC5 and it was nice. I dont really have 'goals' power wise. I just want to have it tuned for the motor's health. I read a few things about the e-manage as well but just wasnt 100% on what works well witht he s2k. ill keep reading then.
As for my setup, I have a snorkel, k&n filter, Berk's TP, and J's 60rs. In the future ill just add header and something for tuning. its a DD, i don't track, no need for any gnarly setup. just simple.

kpro wont work on an ap1, or atleast it didnt the last time i looked. i had one on my MY02 and tuned well it make great power and adjusting vtec is nice, as you can do it on the fly.

Make sure and get the frog harness so that you do not have to cut into your factory ecu wiring. I still use my VAFC2 with my CTSC set up, it has limitations as it wont adjust timing or narrow throttle, but for the money and ease of use on the fly it does the leaning out I need it to very well, it cant be beat.
I would get it and then down the road if you change your goals and want some other form of engine management, then just sell it, there will always be someone out there that is looking for one of these. In fact you might just try and find a used one yourself.
Typical cost used is $150, the new Frog harness if you cant find one used is also $150. Instillation is super easy but you may want some assistance to get the unit initially set up or calibrated to work with your car if its new and never been set up for a S2000, there is directions but can be confusing.
If you want to maximize the performance of your car and run safe AFR levels I would highly recommend getting a wideband set up. Your AFR fluctuates depending on weather temp and other atmospheric conditions, so being able to see your afr and make adjustments on the fly when needed is best and will force you to get to learn some aspects of at least simple tuning with your fuel curve. The wide band kit from AEM which is a good one I recommend cost about $250 -$300 depending on who you buy through. Id say go this rout and save your money on the tuner, you don't need one when you can street tune, have a member help you if needed and the money you save at the dyno will help offset the cost of the widband. The widband is a great investment no matter what set up you have now or in the future, ie. turbo, SC /NA
Even with the Vafc your stepping into a new world, i think its fun and ads to the enjoyment of the S, just makes my relationship with it that much more satisfying. But recognize this before you start getting into external management no matter what method you choose. In the long run starting with the vafc and learning the basics to tune yourself will save you much money and frustrations. Or I recommend leaving it alone and just enjoy the few bolt ons you have and leave it at that. I wouldn't recomend stepping into any tuning device you cant learn and take care of yourself or any bolt on modification for that matter unless you are made of money, it can be a real headache and financial nightmare to hand your car to a shop and have them do a bunch of modifications that you have no participation in.
Hope this helps gives you a little insight and make your decisions easier for what ever you decide.
Feel free to pm me if you have any questions about this stuff.
I've had great luck with it for tuning NA. Gained about 15 hp on a 2002 by leaning out the top end (very rich with stock tune). Never had any driveablity issues.
I have a VAFC-II and PnP harness for sale if you're interested.
