During normal driving (which accounts for about 1% of my road time) I shift at about 5k.

The other 99% of the time I shift when I hear the third chirp of my shift warning doohicky.

But I agree about the 5K shift for normal driving... Mine is a daily driver, so it get's a little crazy trying to do VTEC all the time in traffic... Pisses a buch of people off too. I'd rather Piss them off when the traffic is clear and I can leave them in the dust or in the curves

Look man......as you can see.....there is an assortment of ideas on "where to shift"........my advice would be this....

Start in 1st gear.....then shift to 2nd......next.....to 3rd....then 4th.....5th...and maybe even 6th.

I am a wuss, I follow the manufacturers recommendations for shifting which means I shift between 3500 and 4100 rpm. I let loose sometimes, but I like my cheap insurance premiums and want my car to last. Plus, I am studying to be a cop so the less high rpm stunts I perform, the less likely I will have any unpleasant run ins with the fuzz which will hurt my chances of being behind the badge someday.
