Canon 30D or Nikon D80
#4
I just went through this as well. I went back and forth for a while trying to decide what I wanted to buy.
I thought my network of friends was overwhelming Canon (flexibility to trade lenses, etc...) and would be an advantage. I then went to the stores, held the cameras, played a little and did some research.
My impressions are that the Nikon D70/80 is lined up against the Canon Rebel line, the Nikon D200 is matched against the Canon 20/30D, and then the others match up in the high end cameras.
Ultimately, I chose a Nikon D70s. I wanted CF (only the 80 in the Nikon line doesn't use CF). I wanted to save some $$ to put towards lenses, and if I decide I don't want them in the long run, I would't have a $1600 body to sell, but rather a $600 body. Lastly, and maybe most important, was it felt a little better in my hands. Lastly, I saw that Nikon tries to keep all the cameras similar - i.e. product to product, buttons, switches etc... are in similar places. Look at a Rebel, then a 20D/30D and things are in different places. I liked that consistency.
I ended up with the D70s kit (18-70mm lens), and I bought the 70-200 2.8 AF-S VR lens and 1.7x teleconverter to round out my purchase.
Just my 2 quid

Thanks Gary, I'll take a look at the D70s when I go check them all out...again
Thats one of the benefits of the Nikon, for the standard lense it wins hands down. 18-135 is a great walk around lense, compared to the Canons 18-55 which I've used before, and didn't like :/
