Instead of playing with P mode (unsure what that is), Do some research on the following terms - ISO, Aperture, Shutter speed. Then skip over Av, Tv, do not stop at GO, do not collect $200. Go directly to M.
It'll be really frustrating at first, but give it a week and trust me you'll learn super super quick.
