Default First Attempt with the 580EXII

Came out interesting. The raw file didnt come out the way I wanted it (it was close), but nothing photoshop cant fix. Any tips on how to get shots like these straight from the camera?

The flash was fired off shoe, at -1 1/3 EV, and bounced off a 32" umbrella...oh, and a gold omnibouce....

Comments, questions, bsing, all welcome.

P.S. Here is the color version....

All in all, not too bad, but a HUGE way to go to where Id like to be....in time.

The tip of her nose is chopped off in the B&W version on my monitor. It is very difficult to pinpoint light from a flash (like you're trying to do here) without using some sort of light-killing black cloth or something along those lines on your subject. You could try backing away from your subject to allow the light to fall off more.

there's a loss of tone in the B/W version which explains why it looks like her nose is chopped off.

It's an incredible piece. Top shelf quality, completely silent firing, quick recharge. Really well made. My only gripe is for $500, I wish they had a regular, rechargable canon Li Ion battery, and not need 4 AA ones.

What was the difference in the RAW file? In what you posted I see control of light spill (simulated by Pshop contrast?) and a softer look than I'd figure you get from a plain umbrella.

I prefer AA's over proprietary battery packs. You can get 2500+ mAHr NiMH's (and use any future capacity improvement) and you can get AA's everywhere on the planet. My Nikon Speedlight comes with a fifth-AA battery door extension to compensate for NiMH's lower voltage (fires fine with four, faster recycle with five).

in a pinch AA's are easier to get a hold of than propreitory batteries.
