Default I think my lense/camera is messed up?

So today while working on a car I noticed that at anywhere between 18-35mm my camera won't focus. in auto mode, manual everything it doesn't do it. And I also noticed the twist when I zoom is more firm.

Did I break something?

Camera info: Sony A200 w/ 18-75 f/3.5-5.6 ~2500 shots taken.

I don't know the Sony system at all but... does the lens have a macro switch? Otherwise I'd remove the batteries entirely, wait ten seconds, and replace them (and look in the owner's manual for a complete "reset" function).

try cleaning the contacts on the lens.

And you do mean the 18-70 kit lens right? It may be the lens. Good excuse to go out and buy a better one

Do you have another lens? If so try it and see if you get the same symptoms. If you dont its certainly an isolated lens issue.

when you say the twist to zoom is more firm.. does the lens lock? i am not familiar with sony glass so i have no idea but i know some of the sigma lenses have a lock on them.

Nope no lock. It just seemed to have more resistance when zooming out between 28-17. But it just started working again.. I have no clue what happened

^ the alignment of the elements inside the lens shifted. This can and does occur if the lens gets knocked sometimes. I had it happen to a 70-200m F2.8L I have.
