I don't know, from what I recall you have a 30D, no? If thats the case, then I say the 24-70L without question. The 17-40L would be obsolete on a camera that is not a full frame body.

My vote: 24-70

f2.8 when you can

If it makes you feel any better, Dave, camera gear holds its value very well. If you decide you want to up/downgrade, it is as simple as starting a thread and calling FedEx.

Done dizzle. Ordered the 70-200 2.8 from Amazon. I didn't want to go to B&H because on a $1700 lens, the tax is pretty substantial. So, got it for $1723 with overnight shipping. Ill have it tomorrow. Yeayyy me.

If anything, do you think I can get away without the 24-70 on our trip, with the current gear I have?

Wigma 10-20mm
Canon 50mm 1.4
Tammy 17-50mm
Sigma 150
Canon 70-200

Should be enough right?

Absolutely

I plan to do this combo most of the time:

1Ds with 17-40mm & 1D with 70-200mm with CP and 3.0 ND. If you want to pick up anything else before going, I would look into a very sturdy tripod and serious ballhead. The tripod should be able to get very low to the ground. Check out Feisol if you don't want to go the Gitzo route. My current favorite ballheads are Markins and Acra-Swiss. In fact, I'm getting ready to make my own direct B&H deposit right now on a new Acra-Swiss Z1 plus the appropriate plates: P5 for camera, P20 for 70-200mm, and P30 for 300mm (you won't need this one).

What's so special about a ballhead? I like my tripod, I have no issues with it....can get within 12" or so off the ground....what else is it missing?
